During my visit with Judge Bain, I also had the opportunity to meet—and earn the “endorsement” of Josey, the court’s drug treatment support dog. (See below) Josey is a wonderful reminder that compassion and accountability can work hand in hand in our justice system.
I am a strong advocate for specialty courts because I see their impact every single day. Many individuals who enter the justice system are struggling with underlying substance abuse or mental health challenges. When those root issues go unaddressed, the cycle often continues.
Specialty courts break that cycle.
By focusing on treatment, accountability, and support, we give people the tools they need to make lasting changes—leading to safer communities and better outcomes for everyone. It truly is a win-win.
I will never forget my first weekend arraignment as a new Judge, because Cheryl was there. In that moment, she showed exactly who she is—not just as an attorney, but as a person.
